Assignment

Your Task: Rewrite the hospital scene where Johnny's mother comes to visit. In your version, the nurse does not turn her away, but lets her in the room. Imagine Johnny's reaction. What would Johnny's mother say to him? What would Johnny say to her?

You are writing part of a narrative, not a script. Sentences, punctuation, and paragraphs should appear the way it would in a book. Use the book or passage above as an example. Pay special attention to the dialogue and how the author starts a new paragraph each time she changes speakers.

The Outsiders Chapter 8 Assignment

A nurse appeared at the doorway. “Johnny,” she said quietly, “your mother’s here to see you.”
Johnny opened his eyes.  At first they were wide with surprise, then they darkened. “I don’t want to see her,” he said firmly.
“She’s your mother. I’m letting her in.”
She opened the door and Johnny’s mom walked in.
“What do you think you’re doing? Running away? Are you crazy? How about for one time you stop being ungrateful and just behave.”
“Please, just leave. I don’t want to hear it. I already know, I’m grounded. I really don’t want to be lectured just yet. Goodbye”
“I’m not leaving. I am your mother and I have the right to be here.”
Johnny just ignored her and fell asleep. When he woke up, she was gone and Ponyboy was there.  They talked for a while, and then Ponyboy left.
