Assignment

Your Task: Rewrite the hospital scene where Johnny's mother comes to visit. In your version, the nurse does not turn her away, but lets her in the room. Imagine Johnny's reaction. What would Johnny's mother say to him? What would Johnny say to her?

You are writing part of a narrative, not a script. Sentences, punctuation, and paragraphs should appear the way it would in a book. Use the book or passage above as an example. Pay special attention to the dialogue and how the author starts a new paragraph each time she changes speakers.

The Hospital

A nurse appeared in the doorway. "Johnny," she said quietly, "your mother's here to see you." Johnny opened his eyes. At first they were wide with surprise, and then they darkened. "I don't want to see her," he said firmly.

"She's your mother."

"I said I don't want to see her." His voice was rising. He stands up and, the nurse was surprised the he pulls out a knife and says in a devilish voice "get away from the door" the nurse runs to the other side of the room and stars crying in fear.

When the three boys got out the room they saw Jonny's mom and they walked by ignoring her and went to Dally's room and Dally was amazed that Jonny was walking. They took Dally and they left the hospital, and went home to see their friends.

When Pony woke up the next day they saw Jonny's mom on their couch and ran to the kitchen to get a knife. He was scared out of his mind and stabbed her ten times in her temple. He was crying but he had to do it. When he was done he went in the back yard and buried her and they never noticed she was gone.
