Assignment

Your Task: Rewrite the hospital scene where Johnny's mother comes to visit. In your version, the nurse does not turn her away, but lets her in the room. Imagine Johnny's reaction. What would Johnny's mother say to him? What would Johnny say to her?

You are writing part of a narrative, not a script. Sentences, punctuation, and paragraphs should appear the way it would in a book. Use the book or passage above as an example. Pay special attention to the dialogue and how the author starts a new paragraph each time she changes speakers.

A nurse appeared in the doorway "Johnny" she said quietly, "Your mother is here to see you." 

Johnny opened his eyes. At first they were wide with surprise, then they darkened. Johnny didn’t say anything. Me and Two-Bit just kinda stared at each other for a second. There she was, Johnny's mom. She stood there silently in the doorway. You could see her eyes start to fill with water. 

Johnny just closed his eyes and turned his head to the side. 

"Johnny?" she paused for a minute, "how are you feeling?" 

Johnny hesitated "what do you care?" 

"Johnny, don't do that. I'm your mother and I care about you." It stayed quiet for awhile. 

Then Two-Bit blurted out, "Well, Johnny Boy, I think me and Ponyboy are gonna go out for a smoke." 

As we started for the door Johnny's mom turned and said, "You know you guys really shouldn't be smoking." 

Me and Two-Bit just kept walking, and when I looked back I could see Johnny's face, he was in pain. I turned the corner slowly, then I couldn't see them anymore.
