Assignment

Your Task: Rewrite the hospital scene where Johnny's mother comes to visit. In your version, the nurse does not turn her away, but lets her in the room. Imagine Johnny's reaction. What would Johnny's mother say to him? What would Johnny say to her?

You are writing part of a narrative, not a script. Sentences, punctuation, and paragraphs should appear the way it would in a book. Use the book or passage above as an example. Pay special attention to the dialogue and how the author starts a new paragraph each time she changes speakers.

Outsiders Chapter 8 Assignment

Outsiders Chapter  8 Assignment

There was a faint knock on the door. “Johnny, she is here to see you.”
Johnny’s eyes opened up surprised, and then turned cold. “I told you, I didn’t want to see her.”
“I’m sorry,” The nurse said. “We can’t deny her from seeing you though, you are her son.” The nurse walked out, letting his mother walk in.
Johnny just lay with his eyes closed, not bearing to see his mother’s cold harsh glares and what she was going to say next.
     “Johnny..”  She started.
“I don’t want to hear it.” Johnny snapped.
“Don’t talk to me like that, I am your mother.” She then grew silent. It stayed like that for a good minute, than she started up again. “Johnny, what you did was stupid. What was in your right mind? Running away like that? And then risking your life for some children? Are you insane?”
Johnny stayed silent, breathing slightly harder.
     “Answer me child, why?”
“I killed someone!” It came out like that. In such an obscene way, that would hurt anyone.
Two-Bit was the one who spoke up next. “He just saved a bunch of kids lives, and he’s too sick to deal with this.” He stood up and pulled out a cigarette. “
You two shouldn’t even be here, you are just some no good hoodlums.” Her temper started to build up even more.
“Mom, they aren’t just no good hoodlums. They are more like family to me than you or the old man is.” He lay there, trembling in pain. “Ponyboy, you have any smokes?”  He took a cigarette from Ponyboy. He received a lighter from Two-Bit. They all stood in silence.
After Johnny was done with it, and put it out, he turned slowly to his mother. “Please don’t visit anymore.” Then his eyes turned white and he passed out. The nurse rushed in and told everyone they had to leave. Ponyboy and Two-Bit left, heading towards Dallas’s room.

  1. Nice job, Charli. I think this is a pretty realistic representation of the characters S.E. Hinton created. (Right down to Johnny smoking a cigarette in his hospital bed to calm his nerves.)

Remember to indent when ever you switch speakers - it makes the dialogue easier to follow. I corrected your paragraphs for you. Nice work.
